OTTAWA - The Oasis Zoo Run September 21 in Toronto, Ont., serves as Athletics Canada’s Canadian 10-kilometre road race Championship as well as the finale for the annual Timex National Road Race Series. With so much on the line more than 40 elite athletes will be among a crowd of 3000 as they race for national supremacy. Notably the elite field includes all of Canada’s marathoners from both the 2012 Olympic Games and the 2013 World Championship.
Provincial teams from Alberta, British-Columbia, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario and Saskatchewan will battle out as part of the Timex Series Finale. The Timex Series Finale at the Oasis Zoo Run is the culmination of an entire season of races, 84 in total, held in provinces across the country.
The elite field includes defending champion Reid Coolsaet of Hamilton, Ont., as well as Eric Gillis of Antigonish, N.S., and Dylan Wykes of Kingston, Ont. All three represented Canada at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, England. The men’s race will also feature Rob Watson of London, Ont., who competed for Canada in the marathon at the recent World Championship. Watson was runner-up in last year’s event.
The women’s elite field includes a pair of competitors from Canada’s 2013 World Championship team in Krista DuChene of Brantford, Ont., and Lanni Marchant of London, Ont. Marchant was runner-up at the 2012 edition of the Canadian 10km Championship. Based on time Natasha Wodak of Port Moody, B.C., enters the women’s race as the one to beat posting the season’s fastest time at 32 minutes 42 seconds.
